Graduate Track Pathway

GPT allows the student to complete the graduate program (thesis MS, non-thesis MS, or PhD) earlier and at less expense than pursuing each degree sequentially. Undergraduate students enrolled at EE or CpE program may opt to apply for the GTP program after completing 60 hours of BS program. There are two GTP tracks: BS / MS track and BS/PhD track. The final BS/graduate degrees may be EE/EE, EE/CpE, CpE/CpE, or CpE/EE.

Benefits of the GTP program

  • Undergraduate and graduate courses may be chosen with greater flexibility,
  • Up to 9 lecture credit hours of ECE lecture courses (5xxx-level or above) may apply to both the BS and MS requirements. (for BS/MS track)
  • Up to 12 lecture credit hours of ECE lecture courses (5xxx-level or above) may apply to both the BS and PhD requirements. (for BS/PhD track)
  • The 9 hours taken for shared BS/MS credit may be taken at the lower undergraduate tuition rate,
  • The GRE is not required for graduate admission,
  •  Research work toward MS or PhD, may begin before the BS requirements are completed. In such cases, students are encouraged to enroll in EE/CpE 4099 while engaged in such research.

Eligibility

To be eligible for applying for the GTP program, an ECE undergraduate must:

  • Complete 60 credit hours of undergraduate study (typically the first semester of junior),
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0 cumulative GPA,
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.5 in all ECE courses taken (at least 18 hours), and
  • Identify an ECE faculty member who agrees to serve as the MS thesis advisor and recommend the applicant for the GTP program (for PhD and thesis option MS only).

To enroll in the graduate program, an ECE undergraduate must:

  • Complete the remaining requirements for your BS degree and apply for graduation, no later than one months before BS graduation.
  • After your BS degree has been awarded, review your graduate degree audit to see which shared credit courses have been approved for use toward your graduate degree.
  • Enroll as a formal graduate student in the semester immediately following the semester in which the BS degree is awarded (summer session break is acceptable).
  • Before earning a BS degree, an undergraduate student is not a formal graduate student.
  • If the student exits the program before completion of the MS degree requirements or fails to maintain continuous enrollment at Missouri S&T, the designated shared-credit courses (9 lecture credit hours of 5xxx-level or above) will not apply toward MS requirements in the event of future readmission.
  • If a student switches from thesis option to non-thesis option, then the designated shared-credit courses will not apply toward MS requirements, but only toward BS requirements.
  • The student is responsible for checking on how graduate coursework will affect scholarships and other financial aid. Once the student becomes a graduate student, he/she is not eligible for Federal Pell Grants, though is still eligible for Federal Financial Aid and will be eligible for fellowships and teaching/research assistantships.
  • International students should check with International Affairs during completion of the GTP program to ensure immigration status will be maintained throughout the duration of the program.
  • All other policies are subject to those of the campus GTP Program. For more information, please see Grad Track Pathway Admission and Standards
  1. If you're interested in the Grad Track Pathway (GTP), start by discussing the admission criteria, program requirements, and which courses are eligible for shared credit (9 hours for BS/MS and 12 hours for BS/PhD) with both your undergraduate and graduate advisors, as well as your department’s GTP coordinator.
  2. Apply provisionally to the graduate program for the term following your expected undergraduate completion. You should apply at https://connect.mst.edu/apply/ before earning your BS degree with the same account used when you applied for admission to your Missouri S&T undergraduate degree. If you don't remember your account log-in information, reach out to Graduate and International Admissions for assistance. Make sure to select that you are a current S&T student applying through the GTP program.
  3. Graduate Admissions will review your application. If you meet the minimum university requirements, your application will be forwarded to the department for further review. If admitted, you will receive an email notification of your admission, along with a link to the form for designating shared credit courses.
  4. Submit the form to designate which courses you want to use for shared credit. This form will be sent to your undergraduate and graduate advisors, the department chair/designee, and the vice provost of graduate education/designee for approval.
  5. When the application for the term you selected to begin the graduate degree opens, you will receive an email to confirm your intent to pursue the graduate degree and verify that the term is still correct. If you confirm, your application will be rerouted through the admission process for a final admission decision.

Courses approved for shared credit may also be applied toward one or more graduate certificates in addition to the MS degree (courses used for a specific certificate cannot be counted toward an additional certificate).  The student must include the name(s) of the intended certificate program(s) as well as the name of the intended MS program on the GTP Admission and Course Approval Form when applying for the GTP.  The student must have already applied and been admitted to the intended MS program before applying for admission to the graduate certificate program(s).  The student must receive the MS degree in order to also receive the graduate certificate(s) in the same or future semester/session.
